A Sikh prince of Punjab, he captured Lahore in 1799 and proclaimed himself
Maharaja. He wrested control of Punjab from the Afghans and Pathans and

A Hindu social reformer who tried to eradicate sate, purdah and child

English writer, whose famous works include Tales From the Hills, The Light
That Failed, Jungle Book, Barrack Room Ballads, Kim, Just-so Stories, Puck
of Pook's Hill. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907, which
he later returned. |
