Czech Republic: Historical Dates

 

About ad 900 Bohemia emerged as a powerful central European kingdom.
1347 Charles IV of Bohemia was crowned Holy Roman Emperor. Under his rule, Prague became Europe's second largest city (after Paris).
1415 The Bohemian religious reformer Jan Hus (John Huss) was burned at the stake. His followers began fighting with Roman Catholics in 1419.
1618 Czech Protestant nobles revolted against Catholic Habsburg rule, touching off the Thirty Years' War.
1620 The Protestant rebellion in Bohemia was crushed by Habsburg forces. Bohemia came under direct Habsburg rule, and Catholicism and the German language were institutionalized.
1918 The dreams of Czech and Slovak nationalists were realized with the creation of the independent state of Czechoslovakia following the end of World War I.
1938 European powers forced Czechoslovakia to grant Nazi Germany control of the Sudetenland. Germany occupied Bohemia and Moravia the following year.
1948 Communists took control of Czechoslovakia's government.
1968 In August, the liberal reforms of the "Prague Spring" were crushed by a Soviet-led invasion.
1989 Mass demonstrations and public pressure ended Communist rule in Czechoslovakia. Václav Havel, a playwright who had helped to inspire the protests, was elected president in December.
1992 Slovak nationalists demanded independence. Havel resigned rather than preside over the division of Czechoslovakia.
1993 The more industrialized Czech Republic and the more agrarian Slovakia became separate nations. Havel was elected first president of the Czech Republic.
1997 The European Union (EU) invited the Czech Republic to begin the process of becoming a full member.
1999 The Czech Republic joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
