Indonesia: Historical Dates

 

About ad 400 Indonesia began to be exposed to Indian culture and ideas. Hinduism was a primary influence on Java, while Buddhism was predominant on Sumatra.
About 600 The Buddhist kingdom of Sri Vijaya on Sumatra established itself as the preeminent power in the region.
1400s Islam spread from Malacca (now Melaka) and other trading centers throughout Indonesia.
1511 Portuguese forces took command of trade through the Straits of Malacca and began opening Indonesian ports to trade.
1610 The Dutch established a trading post on the site of modern Jakarta.
1682 The Dutch East India Company succeeded in establishing complete control over Indonesian trade. It soon began to assume political control as well.
1799 Control of Indonesia passed from the Dutch East India Company to the Dutch government.
1811 British forces occupied Dutch territories in Indonesia during the Napoleonic Wars. The territories were returned to the Netherlands in 1816.
1870 The Dutch began to extend their political control of Indonesia from Java and Sumatra to the rest of the islands.
1912 Indonesia's nationalist movement was born.
1942-1945 Japan occupied the Netherlands Indies during World War II.
1945 Nationalist leaders Sukarno and Muhammad Hatta declared Indonesia's independence. The Dutch refused to recognize the declaration.
1949 The Netherlands formally recognized Indonesian independence.
1959 Sukarno assumed greater powers and introduced his program of Guided Democracy.
1963 Indonesia gained control of West Irian, which was later renamed Irian Jaya.
1965 An attempted coup was crushed by General Suharto, who assumed broad powers the next year.
1968 Suharto was named president.
1975 Indonesia invaded and later annexed the former Portuguese colony of East Timor.
1991 Pro-independence demonstrators in East Timor were massacred by Indonesian soldiers.
1998 Escalating riots and protests against the government's handling of a severe economic crisis force President Suharto to resign.
1999 East Timor voted to become independent.
