Norwegian Vikings began
raiding Western Europe and the British Isles. |

Vikings colonized
Iceland. |

Harald I conquered
several local Viking kingdoms and united Norway. He established his
capital at Trondheim. |

Eric the Red led Viking
settlers to Greenland. A few years later his son, Leif Ericson, became

King Olaf I introduced
Christianity to Norway. It became firmly established, and helped end the

An outbreak of plague
killed about half the people of Norway, weakening the country and

Norway came under Danish
rule. |

Norway became a Danish
province, and Lutheranism became the official religion. |

Sweden, but its colonies remained part of Denmark. Sweden crushed a

Germany invaded Norway
during World War II (1939-1945) and quickly controlled the country. King
Håkon VII and the cabinet fled to London, and a pro-Nazi government was

Germany surrendered, and
Håkon VII returned to Oslo in triumph. |

Norway became a charter
member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. |

Norway became a charter
member of the European Free Trade Association. |

Norway's economy expanded
greatly as a result of petroleum and natural gas production in the North
Sea. |

Norwegian officials led
negotiations between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization
that resulted in a historic peace agreement. |

Norway hosted the Winter
Olympic Games at Lillehammer. |
