Norway: Historical Dates

 

About ad 800 Norwegian Vikings began raiding Western Europe and the British Isles.
About 875 Vikings colonized Iceland.
About 900 Harald I conquered several local Viking kingdoms and united Norway. He established his capital at Trondheim.
About 985 Eric the Red led Viking settlers to Greenland. A few years later his son, Leif Ericson, became one of the first Europeans to explore North America.
990s King Olaf I introduced Christianity to Norway. It became firmly established, and helped end the Viking period.
1349-1350 An outbreak of plague killed about half the people of Norway, weakening the country and increasing dependence on foreign grain imports.
1397 Norway came under Danish rule.
1536 Norway became a Danish province, and Lutheranism became the official religion.
1814 Norway became a part of Sweden, but its colonies remained part of Denmark. Sweden crushed a revolt aimed at Norwegian independence.
1884 The Norwegian parliament won greater control over the ruling cabinet.
1905 Norway became an independent nation.
1940 Germany invaded Norway during World War II (1939-1945) and quickly controlled the country. King Håkon VII and the cabinet fled to London, and a pro-Nazi government was installed.
1945 Germany surrendered, and Håkon VII returned to Oslo in triumph.
1949 Norway became a charter member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
1959 Norway became a charter member of the European Free Trade Association.
1970s Norway's economy expanded greatly as a result of petroleum and natural gas production in the North Sea.
1993 Norwegian officials led negotiations between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization that resulted in a historic peace agreement.
1994 Norway hosted the Winter Olympic Games at Lillehammer.
