1979 Park was assassinated by intelligence officers. The military continued to hold power by martial law.
1987 After years of protests, a new, democratic constitution was adopted. Under this constitution, South Korea held its first direct presidential elections.
1988 The Summer Olympic Games were held in Seoul.
1991 South Korea was admitted to the United Nations as an independent country.
1997 The South Korean currency plummeted as investors lost confidence in the country's debt-laden economy, sparking the nation's worst economic crisis since the Korean War.
